Avery Art Featured in New Hampshire Magazine

I’m delighted to be featured in the September 2026 issue of New Hampshire Magazine in an article exploring the community of women artists who have made their creative homes under one roof in downtown Exeter.
Written by Rick Fabrizio, “Where the Business of Art is the Art of Business” tells the story of three artists working in different mediums from studio and retail spaces in the same building: Jennie Bishop of White Wave Photography, Alyssa Watters of Art by Alyssa, and me, Lauren Avery Hutton of Avery Art.
When I moved Avery Art to Exeter, I knew I had found the right place for my studio. What I didn’t know until after signing the lease was that two of my neighbors would also be working artists.
As I shared with New Hampshire Magazine, “What are the odds that three women artists would end up renting commercial spaces in the same building on a downtown main street? It was this happy accident that we all ended up here.”
The article explores what it means for each of us to balance the creative and business sides of our work, while maintaining physical spaces where people can experience art in person. For me, that balance is an ongoing one. Painting and running a business require very different kinds of energy, but having a studio where I can create, welcome visitors, and see how people respond to the work makes the challenge worthwhile.
“The artist should create for themselves, and challenge themselves, but if the work resonates with other viewers, that is a gift all around.”
The feature also gave me the opportunity to reflect on why I believe art continues to matter so deeply.
Art has become more accessible and participatory than it once was, but its ability to affect how we experience the world around us remains powerful. That connection is central to my work at Avery Art, where I create paintings with the spaces they will inhabit in mind, often collaborating with interior designers, art consultants, and curators to create work that feels considered and at home within an interior.
Perhaps most importantly, I continue to paint because I love the process itself and the unexpected connection that can happen between a painting and the person viewing it.
